We are currently recruiting to fill the following positions:

Controller. The Thomas Jefferson Foundation is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Controller. This position reports directly to the VP & CFO, directly supervises a staff of four, and serves as a key member of the senior management team. The position oversees the accounting department functions including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, investments and grants administration and is responsible for accurate and timely monthly and annual financial statements and supporting schedules. Other duties include coordination of the annual financial statement audit and preparation of IRS forms 990 and 990-T, endowment earnings allocation and calculation of allowable spending, service on budget team which determines the annual operating and capital budgets, cash flow projection and management, development of policies and procedures to ensure strong internal controls, responsibility for general ledger structure and maintenance and optimization of financial software.

The candidate must have the following technical, analytical and managerial experience and abilities:

Technical
  • In-depth knowledge of non-profit GAAP and financial reporting principles and practices including accounting, compliance and reporting for private and federal grants
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations applicable to non-profits
  • Tax exempt bond financing
  • Development, implementation and maintenance of finance, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll policies, procedures and processes to maintain effective financial controls
  • Coordination and leadership of changes and improvements to financial information systems
  • Strong IT orientation with advanced spreadsheet skills, knowledge of database programs, experience in design and set up of organizational accounting systems; able to quickly learn and use financial software - experience with Great Plains is a plus
  • Cash forecasting
  • Pooled investments, earnings allocation and spending discipline
  • Fixed asset depreciation, record keeping and inventory
  • Demonstrated independent pursuit of training and development opportunities to increase knowledge and skills
  • Microsoft Office suite proficiency
Analytical
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and abstract reasoning skills
  • Financial statement review for accuracy, clarity and consistency - able to discern connections and judge whether financial results are logical given other financial and non-financial information
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial and non-financial data, synthesize information and identify patterns and inconsistencies
  • Ad-hoc report construction to determine project profitability/loss or costbenefit
  • Design and implementation of financial reports to address specialized needs of management and board of trustees
  • Demonstrated experience in work process design and improvement - implements changes and modifications to operations designed to increase efficiency and effectiveness
  • Detail-oriented, hands-on and continually seeks to improve service
Managerial
  • Highly motivated and results oriented self-starter who sets and achieves challenging goals; demonstrates persistence and overcomes obstacles; measures self against standard of excellence; takes calculated risks to accomplish goals

  • Demonstrated experience simultaneously managing 4 or more staff, motivates and influences others
  • Candidly provides and receives feedback; develops cooperation to produce quality materials within tight timeframes; manages distribution of staff duties to concurrently achieve responsibilities and provide even work load
  • Demonstrated experience assessing and working with strengths and weaknesses of staff

The ideal candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment, be confident, self-reliant, poised and assured and possess professional maturity, integrity, reliability, patience, tact, astute intuition and good judgment.

To be eligible for consideration, you must have:
-Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (advanced degree preferred) and CPA certification with audit experience.
-Knowledge of GAAP with experience in not for profit accounting.
-Minimum of 8 years of progressively challenging accounting experience required with no less than 4 years’ experience in a supervisory role.

Curatorial Assistant. Monticello’s Curatorial Department seeks a full-time Curatorial Assistant to ensure that historic interiors and exhibit spaces are clean and well maintained, assist with special events, photo shoots, and provide general administrative support to the department. Regular work schedule is Sunday through Thursday, 6am - 2pm. Requirements include the ability to work a flexible schedule as needed, follow written and oral instructions, work effectively with little supervision, and the ability to climb ladders and scaffolds. Must be knowledgeable of standard office procedures and familiar with Microsoft Office programs. Object handling and care experience preferred. Deadline to apply is September 10.

Human Resources Assistant (temporary). The Thomas Jefferson Foundation seeks an entry-level office assistant to support our busy Human Resources office. The office assistant is responsible for supporting a three-person human resources staff by scheduling appointments, responding to voicemail and email, sorting mail, and answering basic inquiries. Other daily duties consist of face-to-face interaction with Foundation employees and applicants, data entry, filing, and other administrative functions. This person will also assist with ordering of Foundation office supplies, maintaining the office equipment, and will serve as a back-up to other positions in the office. The ability to be organized and multi-task in a busy office with competing priorities is crucial for success. Proven high-level computer skills are essential. Manager of School and Group Programs (Full-Time). The Thomas Jefferson Foundation seeks candidates with interpretive experience to develop and manage the daily operations of school and group programs at Monticello. The Manager of School and Group Programs will take the lead on maintaining, developing, and evaluating school and group programs as well as forming relationships with local and national educators to support Monticello’s education initiatives. The manager will assist in the hiring, training, and evaluation of guides and collaborate with other mangers and the director in long-term planning and implementation of interpretive programming. He or she will also be the direct supervisor of a quarter of the Monticello guide staff, approximately 15-20 guides. A well-qualified candidate will possess at least two years of supervisory experience, an understanding of historic interpretation principles and practices, and an advanced degree in a relevant field of study.
