Jefferson and Monticello class BeginsThis non-credit course held Monday evenings at the University of Virginia features lectures and presentations by Monticello staff members, as well as a special after-hours tour and reception at Monticello. Apple Grafting WorkshopSkill at grafting is the true mark of gardening expertise, but it's also easy to learn and fun to do. Tom Burford will lead this two-hour workshop designed for the novice propagator. Bring only your thin-bladed pocket knife and a pair of hand pruners. Leave with your own grafted apple tree. $10. Plantation Community ToursThese guided outdoor tours focusing on the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored on the Monticello plantation will begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on three Saturdays and three Sundays in March. Included in price of admission.

Starting a Vineyard WorkshopGabriele Rausse will lead this two-hour workshop in the Monticello vineyards. He'll discuss the basic principles of grape growing -- variety and site selection, trellis systems, soil preparation, planting, pruning, pest control, and harvesting -- and provide beginning grape growers a foundation in serious viticulture. Conference: Stability & Reconstruction - The Jeffersonian Diplomatic Tradition and Contemporary SecurityThe reconstruction and stabilization efforts that follow U.S. military involvement overseas and their importance to national security will be discussed Saturday, March 20, at Monticello’s Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies. Panels of experienced diplomats and scholars will discuss the findings of two reports – one on improving cooperation among government agencies, the other on the need for robust diplomacy – in two sessions, beginning at 9 and 11:15 a.m. More information »

History of the Thomas Jefferson Parkway Hike and Launch of the Friends of the ParkwayThe development of the Thomas Jefferson Parkway—the creation of Kemper Park, Saunders–Monticello Trail, and Saunders Bridge—is an intriguing story full of drama, creative design, and clever construction. Join Peter Hatch for a two–hour hike that will focus on the evolution of the project. The hike recognizes the launch of the "Friends of the Thomas Jefferson Parkway," an initiative that will allow our many trail devotees in the community to participate in supporting this popular and vital resource.
